Life Dances for Solo Cello

Performed by David Russell, cello

Life Dances for Solo Cello is a ten-minute work inspired by the search to find one’s own individual voice within the myriad of messages and ideas that we all receive from society and the world. The first movement titled Struggle, tells of the inner struggle one faces when trying to break from restrains put upon us buy others and ourselves. This can create doubt and confusion effecting our self-image, self-worth and does not comply with our truest sense of self.

The second movement titled Reflection, tells of the time of soul searching and contemplation one needs when trying to figure out who we really are and want to be. This contains periods of feeling lost and depressed but also contains glimmers of hope, light, inspiration and clarity.

The final section titled Freedoms’ Reel is about personal breakthrough. This music is inspired by fiddle music, a style which is shared by many cultures around the world. The new found sense of freedom, inspiration, and improvisation found in this movement reflects one’s life choice to follow their own inner voice with courage and joy. The use of fiddle music is a sharp contrast to what is expected from the established classical music tradition and reflects a personal shift away from what society demands of us. It also reflects the courage to branch out away from one’s own idea of what life should be and move in a new and fresh direction of growth.
